We are The Long Confidence, the design studio of Rafi Ajl based in Berkeley, California. We make work driven by grace, quality, and curiosity. Working at the intersection and constellation of craft, art, and design, each piece is made by hand in our workshop, and is designed for a lifetime of use. After 22 winters on the east coast, Rafi made his escape. Following a love of all that is wild, he settled into Northern California, where he has made his home and practice. Learning first to sew from his artist mother, Rafi has been making things and them apart as long as he can remember.

After finalizing choices, we require a 70% deposit to secure your place in our queue, and start material sourcing and processing. Our deposits are non-refundable due to the nature of our work. We are generally on a 8–12 week lead time.

We are happy to extend custom sizing, material, and detail work, to a large degree, on all of our products. We are also excited about developing custom products for folks. Glassware and tabletop goods are some of our favorites, and we have designed special furniture pieces as well. Let us know what you are thinking about and looking for.

Our work is professionally crated and shipped anywhere and everywhere possible. We can offer white glove delivery as well.

We primarily work in two domestically sourced FSC-compliant woods - white oak and walnut - for a large portion of our furniture. That said, we are happy to extend custom material and finish options to our clients on all of our products, so please get in touch. We offer three colors harnessing the innate qualities of our wood.

NATURAL: Standard is our natural finish, a no VOC hard-wax oil that is beautiful and durable, that allows the natural character of the wood to shine through.

LIGHTENED: Our lightened finish is a labor intensive process that removes some of the color of the wood, and is protected by the same hard-wax oil for surface quality and durability.

EBONIZED: Our ebonized finish is made in-house, and is a labor-intensive natural process for blackening wood using the natural tannins of the material. This dark finish has some transparency, so you can enjoy the character of the material. It is protected by the same hard-wax oil for surface quality and durability.

Yellow bronze - commonly thought of as brass - is the primary complimentary metal we work with. We have a variety of surface treatments and patina’s that we offer, focusing on natural brass, dirty brass, and silver nitrate patina. We are happy to explore other possibilities as well.

We have partnered with the National Forest Foundation, a non-profit, and with every piece of furniture purchased from The Long Con, we plant 10 trees in a National Forest in need of reforestation. Our relationship with the natural world is one of give and take, of resource management and of wildness. Our work removes trees from nature, and we are doing our part to put them back. We must think and act as best as possible, seek the highest quality answer, and activate the change that we wish to see in the world around us.
